Dear Matahari community,
As this pandemic exposes systemic vulnerabilities, we continue to invest in building a local, resilient and diverse movement against the exploitation of low-wage working womxn of color, especially domestic workers.
Last week, we learned that two Matahari members were diagnosed with coronavirus. We were grateful to be able to lean on the support of faith and member leaders who organized a multilingual blessing circle over Zoom. Although we are not a faith-based organization, we honor the religious and spiritual inclusivity of our community. As you may already know, the origin of our name stems from the Malay word for “eye of the day,” which echoes our belief that the sun belongs all. In a time when uncertainty and scarcity threatens to divide us, we advocate for a world in which everyone can shine in all of their identities without fear or shame.
A crisis like this invites us to strengthen alliances between the vulnerable sectors. Matahari is committed to supporting our movement partners, and we added a “Movement Building” section to this newsletter to uplift the recent actions we’ve taken to #StayHomeButNotSilent.
Please know that we are interested in sharing only the most helpful information in these updates. We welcome you to write to us with your feedback and suggestions. We may be social distancing, but our intention is to stay as connected as ever.

As promised in our last email, workers can now access the MassUndocuFund application online in multiple languages and should complete this interest form to receive updates about the Matahari Care Fund and National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) Care Fund. City of Boston Alerts
Information about the impact of coronavirus on our community is rapidly changing. Earlier this week, Mayor Walsh announced strict new measures for social distancing including wearing face coverings in public and staying at home from 9pm to 6am daily unless you are an essential worker. For the latest updates, please refer to the City of Boston’s coronavirus website.

Matahari leader speaks to The Washington Post about how the pandemic is impacting undocumented immigrants
Last weekend, a reporter from The Washington Post spoke to Lydia and Jerry, two members of the Matahari community about the impact of the pandemic on undocumented workers. “‘They need us more than ever before,’ said Jerry, 54. Perhaps when this is all over, he said, the American public will recognize how undocumented immigrants risked their lives to help during a time of crisis.” Read the article here.
Matahari leaders launch a listening campaign to learn about the local needs of domestic workers during Covid-19
Over the weekend, leaders discussed how Matahari will address the immediate needs of our community through emergency relief funds, while keeping our eye on the horizon and approving the National Domestic Workers Alliance policy demands to protect workers in times of global crisis and in normalcy. To inform Matahari’s mutual aid efforts and policy advocacy, leaders conceived of and committed to a listening campaign in which they will call approximately 100 immigrant workers next week and learn from their experiences. This initiative will shape our organization’s work in the coming months and inform how we do outreach for our emergency fund and continue to build community in spite of isolation.
Matahari holds its first Portuguese-language online training with Nannies in Action
On Wednesday, April 8th Matahari went live with Nannies in Action as a part of our Domestic Worker Guide to a Public Health Crisis webinar series (watch recording here). Nannies in Action is a Portuguese-speaking nanny training group organized by two Matahari members that centers the workforce development of Brazilian caregivers. Its founders, Paula and Suelen, invited us to join them to discuss best practices for staying healthy during the pandemic and to answer questions about domestic worker rights in Portuguese.

Matahari uplifted #FreeOurFamilies, a campaign to release all persons detained by ICE as these individuals do not have enough soap, toilet paper, or COVID-19 screening available under incarceration. On Tuesday, a federal judge ordered the release of eight ICE detainees in Bristol County. Learn more about the class action Lawyers for Civil Rights filed against Bristol County here.

On what would have been International Nanny Training Day, Matahari will host a 2-hour Facebook live event to discuss domestic worker rights, our wage claims campaign (#OurWorkOurWorth) and three worker-led emergency funds. We will be centering domestic workers, but invite workers from other low-wage industries to join us. The event will be co-facilitated by organizers and leaders, and will be in English and Spanish. Querida comunidad de Matahari,
A medida que esta pandemia expone vulnerabilidades sistémicas, continuamos nuestro compromiso de construir un movimiento local, resistente y diverso contra la explotación de mujeres de color con bajos salarios, especialmente trabajadores del hogar.
La semana pasada, descubrimos que dos miembros de Matahari fueron diagnosticados con coronavirus. Estamos agradecidos de poder contar con el apoyo de los miembros líderes y de los líderes religiosos que organizaron un círculo de bendición multilingüe a través de Zoom. Aunque no somos una organización religiosa, honramos la inclusión religiosa y espiritual de nuestra comunidad. Como ya saben, el origen de nuestro nombre proviene de la palabra malaya para "ojo del día", que enfatiza nuestra creencia de que el sol pertenece a todxs. En un momento en que la incertidumbre y la escasez amenazan con dividirnos, abogamos por un mundo en el que todxs puedan brillar en todas sus identidades sin temor ni vergüenza.
Una crisis como esta nos invita a fortalecer las alianzas entre los sectores vulnerables. Matahari se compromete a apoyar a nuestrxs socios en el movimiento, y agregamos una sección de "Creciendo el Movimiento" a este boletín para destacar las acciones recientes que hemos tomado para quedarnos #EnCasaPeroNoCalladxs.

Líderes de Matahari lanzan una campaña de entrevistas para aprender las necesidades locales de trabajadores del hogar durante Covid-19
Durante el fin de semana, lxs líderes discutieron cómo Matahari abordará las necesidades inmediatas de nuestra comunidad a través de fondos de ayuda de emergencia mientras observamos el horizonte y aprobamos las demandas de la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras Domésticas para proteger a trabajadores en tiempos normales y de crisis. Para informar los esfuerzos de ayuda mutua de Matahari y nuestra defensa política, líderes concibieron y se comprometieron a una campaña de entrevistas en la que llamarán a aproximadamente 100 trabajadores inmigrantes la próxima semana y aprenderán de sus experiencias. Esta iniciativa dará forma al trabajo de nuestra organización en los próximos meses e informará cómo alcanzamos nuestro fondo de emergencia y cómo continuar construyendo comunidad a pesar del aislamiento.

Nannies in Action es un grupo de capacitación de niñeras organizado por dos miembros de Matahari y que se centra el desarrollo de la fuerza laboral de lxs cuidadores brasileños. Matahari compartió la campaña #LibereANuestrasFamilias para liberar a todxs detenidxs por ICE ya que estas personas no tienen suficiente jabón, papel higiénico o detección de COVID-19 disponibles bajo encarcelamiento. El martes, un juez federal ordenó la liberación de ocho detenidxs de ICE en el condado de Bristol. En lo que habría sido el Día Internacional del Entrenamiento de Niñeras, Matahari organizará un evento en vivo de 2 horas en Facebook para discutir los derechos de trabajadoras del hogar, nuestra campaña de reclamos salariales (#NuestroTrabajoNuestroValor) y tres fondos de emergencia dirigidos por trabajadores. Nos enfocaremos en lxs trabajadores del hogar pero invitamos a trabajadores de otras industrias de bajos salarios a participar. El evento será co-facilitado por organizadores y líderes, y será en inglés y español.
